Hi Bill,
I tried a work around. I removed my pci 64 card from the
mother board.
I downloaded sndconfig and tried a manual configuration.
the device was detected to be
*VIA technologies, VT8233 AC97 Audio Controller,*
which is correct, 'cause it works well on my windows installation.

But as the driver installation continued, sndconfig gave me this error,

The following error occurred running the modprobe program: ?

? ?
                            ?
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio.o: ?
                            ? init_module: No such
device ?
                            ?
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio.o: ?
                            ?
insmod ?
                            ?
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio.o ?
                            ?
failed ?
                            ?
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio.o: ?
                            ? insmod sound-slot-0 failed

The same error was detected when I manually ran modprobe.

Let me know if you have any clue to this.
guess u cud try configuring ur sound card with sndconfig, or select the
driver
manually from the list or try running ~# modprobe emu10k1

regards,
Vivek
