Alan,

A big thanks for your help! It may be that I had not used modprobe
snd-intel8x0, or perhaps it was using 2.4.22pre6 kernel. Either way, it
works!

For Rajesh:
* I've compiled 2.4.22pre6 kernal more or less using redhat's '.config'
file with the 8.0 distribution.
* I installed the alsa drivers from:
ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-0.9.5.tar.bz2 (I just built
all the cards, but selecting intel8x0 alone I suppose would be sufficent).
* modprobe snd-intel8x0
* turn up volume levels
* play /usr/share/redhat-config-soundcard/redhat-sample.wav -- works great!
