Normally I do not compile anything, ever. Too "young" in Linux to play with 
sharp objects.

Not a major problem. Thinning the box down is primarily an exercise in 
learning as to what *can* be eliminated; it actually has a 1GB hard drive, 
of which 128MB is swap and 280MB are in use including the kernel-sources 
and kernel-docs. So with 600MB free, reinstalling them (or even leaving 
them there) is not a problem.

My goal was to learn whether they were necessary, whether they could be 
substituted, and what their role was. Succeeded there.

My next goal is to make the Sun work with the ISDN modem my ISP is about to 
give me. That will likely prove harder, since I've:

* never used a modem in Linux
* never used a serial port in Linux
* never compiled anything in Linux
* never used ISDN anywhere

Still, I will eventually figure it out. In the meantime, I'll hold off on 
reformatting my last Windows box and use the ISDN on that one. :-/
