I found out a bit more, which I'd like to share - in case someone else
is experimenting with this. There are two things which can help
dealing with the partitions limitation:

a) Solaris doesn't boot without /usr anyway (/bin is a link to
   /usr/bin), so separating /usr from / doesn't necessarily make
   sense, if one wants to cut down on partition numbers.
b) Linux and Solaris can share the swap partition, if one takes a bit
   of care. See: http://www.ultralinux.org/faq.html#q_1_13

I haven't set up the machine yet (no time...), but should I ever get
round to do so, I'll report back. Given the above, there should be
enough partitions for a decent setup, I'd say.
