"AMD64" vs "x86_64" ?

For all previous architectures, the RPM arch is the same as the
directory structure (i386). Why is the directory structure for Opteron
systems "AMD64" yet the RPM arch is x86_64? Shouldn't the directory
structure also be x86_64?
This makes for a special case when programming tools for kickstart or
image creation. In the past, everything matched and now there's a
one-off.
