I believe it only happens if you've got your machine set to only download and not automatically update downloaded packages - up2date and up2date-gnome get pulled down and then up2date restarts itself at a point where (under default conditions) up2date would've been upgraded... But it hasn't yet, so it goes round and round. ctrl-C-ing out and manually running "rpm -Uvh up2date*.rpm" in /var/spool/up2date and re-running up2date works for me.
