RHEL 3 WS kernel broken on hp workstation i2000 (BigSur)?

Hi Folks,

Trying to install RHEL 3 WS (ia64) on an hp workstation i2000 (Itanium,
not Itanium2-based) crashes during the initial load of the kernel 
with the following message:

ACPI: SCI (IRQ-1) allocation failed
 ACPI-0133: *** Error: Unable to install System Control Interrupt 
Handler, AE_NOT_REQUIRED
ACPI: Unable to start the ACPI Interpreter
Trying to free free IRQ0
CPU0: checking for saved MCA error records

Here the system keeps freezed.

I finally successfully installed RHEL 3 WS using a custom-recompiled 
RHAW 2.1 kernel (2.4.18-e.37smp). Once logged, I try to build a working 
2.4.21 kernel with the kernel-source archive provided on the RHEL 
3 CD (#3 if I remember correctly). To do so, I've loaded the configuration 
file installed in /boot by the installation program and only changed 
the target from Itanium2 to Itanium. After altering a few other settings 
in order for the compile and link to succeed (see Note below), I 
get a kernel crashing my system the same way the original one. Trying 
the updated kernel-source available in RHN didn't help.

Looking my working 2.4.18-e.37smp configuration file, I noticed the 
target was changed from generic to DIG-compliant (still for a Itanium,
not Itanium2 target). So, I've tried this setting with the 2.4.21 
kernel. Unfortunately, it always ended with an error at link saying:

: undefined reference to << pfn_valid >>

Of course, I've checked the MD5 sums of my CD images and tested them 
with linux mediacheck at elilo prompt. Everything is fine there.

Note: with default 2.4.21, make xconfig doesn't work. RHN updated 
2.4.21 kernel corrects the problem. However, I get errors when quitting 
saving the configuration file for CONFIG_BLK_DEV_RAM, CONFIG_BLK_DEV_NBD 
and CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP. These errors don't appear if I use make 
menuconfig instead. In order for the compile to succeed, I need to 
disable profiling, AH and ESP transformation for IP and IPv6 and 
alter ZLib compression and deflate from module to built-in. I had 
to manually play with the CONFIG_XFRM setting too (disable it at 
the beginning, otherwise there are xfrm-related compile error) then 
when all is compiled and you get link errors (with a lot of xfrm-
related symbols), swith the setting back to CONFIG_XFRM=y. The missing 
objects are successfully compiled this time but the process ends 
with the mm.o error described above.
