But that's not quite true is it? The amd64 channel has more ia32
compatibility rpms than the ia64 channel.

In fact, the following you listed don't have to be removed as they are
still in the x86_64 channel:

I'd really like to hear some explanation for why all these packages are
disappearing now.

And there are sure to be requests - and you can't really say that they
can't be looked into at this late date, as the packages were there through
large chunks of the beta cycles - for adding some of these packages back
to the channels. Otherwise, lots of people will manually install the
i386/i686 packages and that'll be a can of worms for everyone involved.
