Sorry to follow up on my own question.
I have found and installed redhat-config-netboot and believe to
understand how it can be used to setup a directory for diskless clients to
boot from.

Questions:
a) will several diskless clients be able to share the same OS copy?
   If yes, where are those files kept wich differ from client to client,
   e.g. logfiles or network configuration files?

b) How can such a diskless client installation be kept up2date?
Will it be sufficient to run 'up2date' on one (of several
identical) diskless clients?
