That was me with the above problem referenced in the URL.

I did try posting to the xfree86.org mailing list. I only need
1024x768 for connecting it to a projector. The suggestions I got were
to try configuring it with the project connected, but that didn't work
either (I don't remember exactly what happened).  It definitely
appears to be a driver change between the XFree86 that came with Red
Hat 8.0 and the one that came with Red Hat 9.

I'd love to hear a solution, but have not spent any more time on it
recently.
