IBM Thinkpad X problem

Hi all,

I am having a strange problem with the X server of my laptop (IBM
Thinkpad T30 - ATI Radeon Mobility M7 LW). I am using the X server that
comes by default with RedHat 8.0.

All of a sudden, my X server starts eating up 99->100% of CPU time. And
the laptop stops responding completely. Surprisingly, it responds to
mouse movements. But that's about it. [And, of course, I can remotely
connect to it, and see that X is taking up all CPU! On the laptop
itself, I can't do a thing because none of my keyboard actions work!!]

I have noticed that this event is caused most of the times by mouse
movements - always mouse drag actions (e.g., moving of a window,
resizing etc.) However, I have had this happen some times with keyboard
actions also (e.g., keyboard actions which result in workspace changes,
etc.).

I have no idea what the problem is. Is there a bug in the IBM touchpad
driver or something - just a wild guess! I would really appreciate any
help - I am really tired of rebooting my laptop every so often because
of X hanging. 

Attached is the 'top' output on my laptop. I have also attached
