I believe you need to do this.  This works for Red Hat BTW, what are u
using?

edit the file 'etc/inittab' and change it so it boots to level 3 instead of
5.  Right now, it probably reads

/etc/inittab

blah blah blah
...
id:5:initdefault

change that line so it reads

id:3:initdefault

Just replace the 5 with a 3.  That should get you all set.

Obviously, You'll have to be logged in as root to make this change.
