Actually there are a number of mode lines all the way down to
640x480. When I remove all the mode lines above 1024x768, I get the
same error I posted in my original message:

(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

It uses the r128 driver. I got the laptop from aslab.com back in
December of 2000 (700 MHz P3). It's actually a Compal (no that's not a
typo of Compaq) N38W2 that I think Dell also was using around that
time so it's a pretty common laptop.

I'll probably look at my 8.0 XF86Config and see if there's anything
relevant but I suspect it's the new 4.3 driver rather than an issue
with the XF86Config file. I'll probably take Mike's suggestion and
post it to the xfree86.org mailing list sometime soon.
