That is entirely possible, but may very well have changed by now.  
If not, it is possible to maybe peek at the kernel sources to see 
how the kernel does it, and write new code to do the same thing.

I'd much rather fix the driver if it is remotely possible, even 
if I have to nag Nvidia a bit.  ;o)
