Yes I was, until yesterday, when I installed the XFree86 binaries from
the RH9 CD-ROM.

I was doing that until I found out the wine project issued RPMs for RH9.

Thank you for your help.  Another person suggested rebuilding the
XFree86 RPMs under RH9, which I may try.
