May be you should consider lyx as a starting point, there is a
description (last time I checked) of how to install the necessary pkg
and I think type 1 fonts.

Another problem is of course which editor to chose, you mentioned vim,
but if you would like to have all the nifty Tex support, such as
Auctex, x-symbol, and preview latex, Emacs has to offer, then I should
mentioned that there is BIDI support for emacs (even with nikkud
support) however that is all frozen and pre release in any case:
