ok, that's a valuable hint because I also have the el4 apps from rpmforge:

# rpm -qa | grep yum
yum-2.4.2-0.4.el4.rf
# rpm -qa | grep create
createrepo-0.4.6-1.el4.rf

I'm going to try it with createrepo-0.4.11-1.el5
