Well everything seems to be working now after a kernel update.
Last time I ran yum update was Friday morning (May 23rd); the only
available update then was for was bash. But I just ran yum update again,
and this time it updated 'kernel' and 'kernel-smp', both to
2.6.9-67.0.15.EL. And after those updates, 'yum install xorg-x11' and 'yum
install xorg-x11-tools', the commands that were giving the dependency
errors before, worked fine, when just hours ago they didn't work.
Very confusing - I can only assume the new kernel update that just became
available fixed the issue, though I can't be sure about that.

- well no, I already had a higher version of xorg-x11-libs. The problem
seems to have been a strange inexplicable bug.
Thanks to everyone for their help. The issue remaining now is why I can't
update 'bash' - as noted in an earlier message, if I choose to update bash
in 'yum update', it gives an error:
Updating : bash ######################### [1/2]
error: unpacking of archive failed on file /bin/bash: cpio: rename
