Yes! I'd tried to do the updates first through yumex, but it complained 
about missing pygpme..... so I thought(!) maybe, as yum is supposed to 
be (IIUC) a front/back end to PackageKit, PK might be able to resolve 
things better - it did! permanent!!!

Thanks Dave, so,,, the rescue mode from the install or Live CD should 
have yum available in its as-is running state? I tried to rpm the yum 
from "packages" on the CD but got bogged down in missing dependencies....
