Authenticated Proxy

Is there an alternate way to support authenticated proxies besides:
proxy=user:password@proxy:1234 in yum.conf or
http_proxy=user:password@proxy:1234
?

This seems to trigger a failure when usernames or passwords contain "@" or
":".
