Floyd,

If you are trying to login as root, it is disallowed by default.

Edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config and change PermitRootLogin to yes

If all else is properly setup you should have no problem logging in.  I
would suggest that once you have made this change you use secure copy
instead of ftp for root activity.
