   Now I know how to use wpa_supplicant I'll try it ... without wicd.

   I might have mentioned that the reason I installed slackware on this host
was network-manager having the same issues connecting to the WAP here with
xubuntu-11.10. Knowing that wicd works in my Dell Latitude E5410 (and does
so here, too) I assumed that it would resolve the connection
authentification problem with the Sony Vaio.

   Back later with results of the re-installation of wpa_supplicant and
running that from the command line.
