   I think the appropriate next step is to get a newer kernel. If I can take
the laptop to a local coffee shop with wifi access (it won't work here),
I could use slackpkg to upgrade the entire system from 13.37 to current. I
did this with my Dell when it first arrived to address similar driver issues
(but that was with the video chip, not the ethernet chip).

   What do folks here think is the most practical approach: custom kernel or
upgrade to current?
