John, See attached (sony-wifi-chip.txt and dell-wifi-chip.txt). > Run netplugd -F -c /dev/null No netplugd here, but ifplugd is installed on the Sony (and invoked in rc.local). > This will run netplugd in the foreground without a config file, so ruling out > any config problems. No output at all, either way. However, ifconfig -a shows eth0 switching between RUNNING and not running as I unplug the ethernet cable and re-insert it. On both the Sony and the Dell, booting with no ethernet cable installed brings up eth0 in the kernel routing table, but it's not RUNNING until plugged in. On the Dell this happens without ifplugd installed. The problem symptom is quite specific: on the Sony when wicd-client is run at a local wifi hot spot eth0 remains in the routing table. On the Dell it does not. Now I need someone's expertise on how to fix that symptom so running wicd-client (which apparently calls 'ifconfig wlan0 up') also calls 'ifconfig eth0 down'.
