Select your AP go to sth like "advanced or configure" (don't have wicd runing right now) and type in your wpa/wpa2 key, then connect to the AP. Another issue is sometimes the hard/softblocking of wlan0 , where hardblocking is the wifi-switch and softblocking may be a disabled network card.
