Hi Rich, I found this patch as it might be the problem: https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/4/12/557 Part of the patchset: https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/4/12/529 My guess is that atl1c (Atheros chipset used on the VAIO) doesn't send the right link status to the kernel, so these patches correct that. They may be in the current kernel but its best to check before you recompile.
