   I've seen similar behavior on my Dell laptop and on a Sony Vaio, whether
in console mode or running X. Seems like the system went catatonic because
it does not respond to pressing the shift key or moving the pointer with the
pad. What works for me is to quickly tap the power button; not held long
enough to shut down the system, just a quick press and release. For reasons
best explained by those who know more than I, this works for me.
