yes USB, no, not udev, since it will print office docs from remote
clients, it sees it all fine,

I put on one of those pocket print servers for usb, and viola works
perfect from remote PC's  which are combo of win xp, win7, ubuntu and
opensuse (our linux environment has requirement for gnome so no
slackware on pc's/laptops), thus something in slackware 14.0 is not
all rosey with cups and this printer, at least we now have printing
until we can sort this mess out, which I'd really like to do without a
dedicated print server device *sigh* (even if it does only cost 1watt
power and 1 ethernet port, it limits us to where we can put it
(slackware PS runs by wireless)
