I remember wondering the same thing a few years back.  Seems that I 
looked, but I failed to find the project.  I looked again just now; 
lo and behold, there is a somewhat active project right here:

Current release 2.5.4 just over three months ago.

I also remember looking back through some old Slackware ChangeLogs to 
seek an answer to the second question.  I don't remember finding 
that, either.  Furthermore I am too tired/lazy to try to hunt it down 
now, but there's where you might look.

Failing all else, ask Pat.  Perhaps he did not know the project has 
continued and/or been reborn.
