Heh, all terminal programs are doing it. A Ctrl-Alt-F3 and login gives 
me text instead of lines around the box.

I'm running Xfce on Nvidia's proprietary drivers. But the command works 
under root, just not for the user account.

It's got to be a setting somewhere. I'll keep digging.
