I think all the way from boot time, I know you can forward the inhalation prompt in Gentoo, so you don't have to sit at the computer while installing it
I think Slackware is similar
It's not the same question, but it's interesting in that you can use one instal to install another, and you don't have to sit at a GUI
I was always a big fan of Slackware, emacs and Gentoo is interesting too
Slackware seemed always to have better defaults for programming better to the Unix ideal
