Apart from sending and downloading files with adb push/pull you can also do adb shell and walk around the filesystem. You can also install an SSH server on your Android device, you don't need root for that. I remember I used to use SSHDroid or something like that, it came with statically compiled dropbear and GUI to start the service and it also supported SCP. And of course you could use it over Wifi without an USB cable.
