Issues with -14.2/x86_64 on Ryzen7 system

I'm working on replacing my old 32-bit desktop server/workstation with a
64-bit host; both have the 4.4.190 kernel. The hardware was new a year ago:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700 Eight-Core Processor

Motherboard: ASUS Prime X470-Pro

RAM: 32GiB, DIMM DDR4 Synchronous Unbuffered (Unregistered) 2133 MHz (0.5 ns)
G-Skill F4-3200C16-8GTZR

VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Device 699f (rev c7)
Gigabyte Radeon RX 550

Ethernet: Intel I211 Gigabit Network Connection

I'm struggling trying to get mission-critical application software installed
and/or working properly. For example, jpilot-1.8.2 would build and install
but kept segfaulting when loading. Judd Montgomery (the developer) worked
with me on this. He installed a patched 14.2 on a virtual machine and sent
me the executable. This works here.

Now I have an issue with JabRef-3.8.2, my scientific reference database. It
loaded last Friday but since then comes up with an error when trying to
load. The same .jar file still works fine on the 32-bit host.

These are the two most recent issues. It's been suggested that the upgraded
libraries in 15.0 will eliminate all the problems I'm having.

Until 15.0 is released please suggest what I could safely upgrade to a
-current release that might allow me to reliably use the 64-bit host for my
business.
