Synopsis:
The i2C architecture was initially designed to lessen costs by streamlining massive wiring systems with an easier interface for connecting a central processing unit (CPU) to peripheral chips in a television. It had a battery-controlled interface(a normal battery which we used for transistor radios and the like) but later utilized an internal bus system (for circuitry and communication patterns between integrated circuits on a printed circuit board).

In 1992, version 1.0 was the first i2C standardized. By 1995, Intel introduced the system management bus (SMBus), which is derived from the i2C. The SMBus defined firmer protocols for communication with low-bandwidth modules and sometimes supported the i2C that required marginal reconfiguration. The SMBus is comparable to the i2C bus but has different enhanced features such as voltage levels, clock frequency and a preference for an additional interrupt request wire.

Although slower than the majority of buses, the i2C is an inexpensive architecture and is ideal for peripherals that do not require a lot of speed such as digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital controllers, built-in tests, real-time clocks, colour-balance, tone and volume control.

I'm working on replacing my old 32-bit desktop server/workstation with a
64-bit host; both have the 4.4.190 kernel. The hardware was new a year ago:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700 Eight-Core Processor

Motherboard: ASUS Prime X470-Pro

RAM: 32GiB, DIMM DDR4 Synchronous Unbuffered (Unregistered) 2133 MHz (0.5 ns)
G-Skill F4-3200C16-8GTZR

VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Device 699f (rev c7)
Gigabyte Radeon RX 550

Ethernet: Intel I211 Gigabit Network Connection

I'm struggling trying to get mission-critical application software installed
and/or working properly. For example, jpilot-1.8.2 would build and install
but kept segfaulting when loading. Judd Montgomery (the developer) worked
with me on this. He installed a patched 14.2 on a virtual machine and sent
me the executable. This works here.

Now I have an issue with JabRef-3.8.2, my scientific reference database. It
loaded last Friday but since then comes up with an error when trying to
load. The same .jar file still works fine on the 32-bit host.

These are the two most recent issues. It's been suggested that the upgraded
libraries in 15.0 will eliminate all the problems I'm having.

Until 15.0 is released please suggest what I could safely upgrade to a
-current release that might allow me to reliably use the 64-bit host for my
business.

Hi Willy,

My Asus motherboard uses UEFI so there's neither grub nor lilo involved. I
have put off the BIOS upgrade so I'll do that now.

BIOS upgraded from 4024 to 5520. No difference trying to load JabRef. Sigh.

?? GRUB is indeed UEFI-able.

Okay. I didn't know that. When the system boots, it boots directly. There's
no menu of choices even though both generic and huge are present.
