This is a very general problem and has not much with what system you are
using. Kernels are getting larger and new features make initrd also
larger, although we are always trying to make it fit on a floppy by
stripping down some features that might not be usefull on a floppy.

Next release will have 'all' helper scripts from alice in a new form, so
you will be able to create CDs and floppies...

Well, this might be abug, I am currently looking into that.

I would say a merge is currently taking place. A fact is that alice is
not a part of SuSE anymore on new products. Instead, one will be able to
import Alice data into autoyast2. Of course you can continue using alice
and always import the data into autoyast2 which will create a profile
(in XML) for you. For this matter we provide a new package alice-compat
which does the export file.

The long term strategy is to have one single system, based on YaST2.
