Strange problems with modules on install disk

Hi,

a very strange problem occured today, when I switched from installing
SLES7 to 7.3.

Our hardware: IBM x-series with one ServeRaid controller and one Adaptec
SCSI controller.

The corresponding file in classes contains 

<SYS_INSMOD_MODULES>
aic7xxx
ips
pcnet32
</SYS_INSMOD_MODULES>

which worked without any flaws with SLES7, but gives me problems with 7.3
(Kernel 2.4.10).

The system fails on inserting the module for the Adaptec controller and
hangs (with several SCSI bus resets) when trying to insert ips.o.

If I do install with the bootdisk from 7.3 and use the modules disk to load
the drivers for both adapters, everything works.

After taking apart the modules disk and the generated boot disk from alice,
I could see, that both modules are *identical* on both disks.

Taking the modules from the modules disk and stuffing them manually into the
initrd of the generated disk didn't help either, booting showed the same
problems. 

Can anyone explain to me, wtf is going on there? Is it the kernel on the
generated disk? Does it differ from the one on the boot disk?
