Hm you can try another way, use the module 
change_kernel.

Install with the std-kernel (no-smp) then use the modules in 
SYS_APPLICATION_SCRIPTS (keep order) :
change_kernel
make_modules
make_boot
make_reboot

in a .kernel.tcf use the following tags:

<KERNEL_RPM_LOCATION>nfs://a.i.p/path/to/the/kernelrpms</KERNEL_RPM_LOCATION>

<KERNEL_RPM>k_smp-2.4.10-24.i386</KERNEL_RPM>

<ADDITIONAL_KERNEL_RPMS>
modutils-2.4.8-9.i386
lvm-1.0.0.2_rc2-6.i386
</ADDITIONAL_KERNEL_RPMS>


This was used to install a 2.4 kernel on a SuSE 7.0, the 
additional_kernel_rpms shouldn't be needed for your task.
