Sax2 cannot open /dev/tty for read

Hello,
I use the tag
<ALICE_POST_SCRIPT>
/usr/X11R6/bin/sax2 -a
...
</ALICE_POST_SCRIPT>
to invoke sax2 during the automatic installation of SuSE linux 7.3. The
above tag is placed in alice/info/fqhn.rus.uni-stuttgart.de.sys.tcf.
This utility worked at previous versions (7.0,7.1) very well.
Unfortunately, this time the Sax2 says (also see below):
Cannot open /dev/tty for read ...
and the monitor remains unconfigured. After login as root and invoking
sax2 manually this error doesn't occur and the monitor is configured
properly.
Any idea?
For completeness: I use alice-0.9.5-11. Log excerpts are here and in the
