Yes, that does solve the problem and prevent the crash.

Unfortunately, AY seems to include the kernel options set at 
installation time in /boot/grub/menu.lst of the installed system.

I would thus need to remove "nomodeset" again from the installed system.

Or is there a way to prevent this behavior?
