Newbie (to Suse) with a Steam-powered Alpha

Hello.. Long-winded situation follows.  Short version: I need some
help with the inital install of 8.1 Suse on an AS4000.

I have an AlphaServer 4000 with 1 21164 (B3004-BA) at 300MHz, 640 MB
RAM and an offboard HSZ50 raid controller.  The system sees a 39+ GB
drive at dkc100.  dka is the cdrom, dkb is a group of single drives I
plan to use as a swap bay.  Linux kernels see the big partition (and
a second raid logical unit) as sda (and sdb).

I have performed successful installs of RedHat 7.2 and Debian 30r1 on
this machine.  I am so far unable to get past the partitioning phase
with debian.  This my first alpha -- I got it for hauling it away from the previous owner's site.

Unlike the other messages in the archive regarding partitioning, my
problem is that YaST tells me I don't have enough space for even the
minimal install.  The software selection screen offers me no
options.

Never having used YaST before, I'm stuck.  This happens no matter how
I set up the partition tables.

Like everybody else, I'd like to use the latest stuff.  But I've got
work for this box to be doing, so I'll load RedHat if I don't get
some inspiration soon.

If some kind soul would like to call me (I can place calls to the US

number]) we can walk through it.  Otherwise, email ideas to me.

By the way, the boot CD image (boot.iso) has an aboot.conf file that
references the floppy.  Is this right?  I had more apparent success
overriding the parameters "rw /dev/fd0" with "ro
/dev/sr0".  I thought perhaps I needed to make a boot floyy but
I can't figure out how to do that.

I think the above explains the "image can't be found" message.

My immediate plan is to try partitioning manually (again!) based on the suggestions I found in the archive.
