You need to do # modprobe loop (2.2 kernels only iirc) before installing the RPM and # mk_initrd -i initrd -k vmlinuz after installing the RPM. It's advised to check /etc/aboot.conf - the kernels were renamed from vmlinux.gz to vmlinuz at some point in time.
