If I understand you correctly, you want to quit domino via cron-job and then
you want to start the backup process? - Actually you are thinking about
making sure domino has quit what you can't be by using rcdomino stop. That's
right?

Try to get it by a cron-job similar to:

su - notes -c "cd /localnotes/data; /opt/lotus/bin/server -q" &&
backupstart.sh
