One thing to keep an eye on is the "MAIL.WaitingForDNS" statistic, and of course the router's queue. If domain name services are unavailable, messages will be put on hold. Retransmission efforts will occur less and less often, if DNS is unavailable for a longer period of time. DNS availability can vary, depending on your IP provider and network connection.
