Dear Sirs and Madams,

dear Thomas,

you are very well saying these words.

We are specialized in anti-virus / anti-spam products and aggree 100% with your statements. But (!) a lot of our customer wants to have these Subject - lines... (i dont know why, i think they will show others that they are trustful... how knows). They will stop urgently these lines if two or three complains arrive to one of the companies bosses... It will disappear fast then... :-))))

Let me just add one sentence to yours concerning virus scanning and maximum covering :

The best way we suggest is to use a virus scanner with multiple scan engines. Our favorite (for domino) is Sybari Antigen for Domino, it cames with 4 different virus scanner you can choose as you like. You can also stack them up to 8 currently (CAI, Norman, NAI, IT-Caspersky, VB Buster, etc.). The concept is to spread the risk to a lot of different scan engines. (maybe one of them is more actual than the other one...) We updated a lot of customer with this product and heard no complains about it. (more about it: http://webing.indocs.de/index.php?a=68 )

Even under these circumstances i would not suggest anyone to say that they were 100% secure... :-(

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Kindest regards

No! I myself hate this line. It is a bit of "he we're doing virus
scanning"! "But --- we do not know if it was useful...!".

From security standpoint it is more than only useless: it fools people.
They think there is no thinking necessary anymore. Just open that
attachment (even if it has an *.exe-extension). It was virus checked!

But the "security experts" at our company are really pride having this
half-witted sentence behind every subject of every mail with an
attachment. They are really pride of telling the world about not knowing
if virus scanning had been effective!

In my opinion such a sentence should only appear if you can absolutely
100% sure your virus scans are effective. If you are not that sure, and
only dreamers and moonwalkers can be, don't make any noise about virus
scanning at all --- except you've found one.

Another point they are missing: no mail system has to fiddle with subject
lines. It is bad behaviour.
