In many years, I have never experienced the "death" of a mail.box at
all. Of course a lot of data is written into and removed from a mail
box database, but that is exactly what these databases are for. No
corruption should occur, or at least it should neither be expected
nor easily accepted. Just my two cents, of course.

If there are worries about the high I/O load, I suggest using i.e.
three mail boxes. They will be used round robin fashion, and maybe
it has a positive effect on the compacting process.
