OK so then you get a problem and you phone up - you tell them you're 
running "Wibble linux 6.15a" - they say: what is that?

First thing they need to do is recreate the problem in their lab.  How 
long is that going to take them?  Imagine doing this for every call they 
receive.

You are right that there is obviously a list of pre-reqs that Domino 
requires - because linux is linux is linux, no matter the distro, its's 
just the particular combination of packages that makes a distro.  However 
,the vast majority of companies are going to want to run a "corporate" 
version of linux such as redhat or suse - these are the people IBM is 
interested in selling Domino (+WebSphere+DB2+...) to.

If you had a company with $1 billion dollars to spend on linux would you 
spend it? - making sure you supported every version of linux out there, or 
would you rather save that cash and spend it on making the software work 
better?

If Debian wanted their distro in the corporates then they should have 
joined UnitedLinux, mind you, that wouldn't have got them too far in 
hindsight!

imho, IBM should list ALL prerequisites before installing lotus domino, in 
this case they'd have to test it only once. But it's very bad if IBM will 
say NO: ONLY RED HAT OR UNITEDLINUX IS SUPPORTED ... If you've followed 
the whole debate, you'll finde a little workaround to become Domino 
running on Debian as well - now why shouldn't IBM support this Domino if 
there are issues / bugs / etc. ? Of course, no question about supporting 
the system itself - I'm talking about Domino ( and only Domino )
... running onto the system(s) ...
