My boss is the same way.  He seems to think that routine reboots is a 
"preventative measure" or "preventative maintenance" issue.
I disagree.

However, older versions of domino (pre release 6) did have interesting 
issues with not swapping pages and entries from the swap.
Over time, the swap would fill up and linux would crash.  Rebooting, on a 
regular basis, was the workaround for us, because IBM seems to put
more priority on resolving issues in their windows and unix releases 
first.

Low and behold, the only "routine" reboots I do, are a direct result of a 
required patch to the kernel.
Any other updates to the operating system can be applied without a reboot. 
 In my opinion, there should be no other reason to reboot the system.

A side-note on the microsoft background comment.  Note that my theories on 
rebooting linux are identical to windows.
9 times out of 10, if you have an issue in windows and rebooting 
'resolves' it, chances are the issue is directly related to the page file 
in windows (virtual memory).

Contrary to popular belief (even microsoft's opinion), windows does not 
need to be rebooted as often as people do it.  Even for windows updates 
that claim the
system needs to be rebooted for the changes to take effect.  There are 
very few updates that can't be applied without simply restarting the 
service(s) respectively.

When it comes down to it, Microsoft admins tend to use the "reboot it" 
plan of attack because it's effortless.  It's unfortunate that we don't 
have more folks out there
that're actually interested in seeing problems resolved.
