Hi,
You are not too old, you only believe that you are ;-)
I thought the same way myself. But automatic dependency checks brought me 
over to smart after all. 
I'll write some documentation to get smart going. It's only three or four 
commands to get you going, including guru and packman rpm repositories.

In fact, rsync shouldn't be broken for most things, except for filenames 
with ":" (at least I heard so). I'll try to fix it as well.
