My Firefox is also the standard esr version from the oss repo. By 
comparing the entries in about:config for both FF and TB for the various 
entries under widget.use-xdg-desktop-portal.* I could see one difference.

widget.use-xdg-desktop-portal.file-picker was set to 2 in Thunderbird, 
but was showing 1 in Firefox, so I changed TB to 1 and that has done the 
job, thanks.
