As Carlos pointed out, it makes not much sense to use that 
linux-deskop-thing. It's just a wrapper for whatsapp's website, to which 
you can go directly with any browser. However, you need whatsapp 
installed on a phone (in both cases).

As much as I know there is no easy way to use whatsapp without having it 
installed on a phone.

As an alternative your friend could install the Signal app on her phone, 
while you use Signal's Linux desktop version. You still need a phone 
number to receive the registration code. This can also be a landline 
(you'll have to wait and click "call me" or so). In the settings you can 
then set a username and hide your phone number if you like.
